United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania provides funding to community partners that deliver programs and services in our five-county region. We refer to our grants asinvestments in the community. Our Impact Grants support nonprofits through multiyear investments, providing our partners with funding stability for three years. Funding decisions are made in collaboration with staff, volunteers, community leaders and other stakeholders and follow a request-for-proposal process run every three years. We also run smaller grant processes year-round to meet emerging needs and to support new grant and investment programs, such as our Community Change Collaboratives. Learn about our funding deadlines, eligibility requirements, and advice on how to navigate the funding process.

How funding decisions are made.

United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania has a competitive proposal and grant-making process that makes it possible for us to invest in a larger and more diverse group of nonprofits throughout our five-county geographic region. Our strategic investments encourage innovation by our agency partners.

Who reviews applications?

Trained donor volunteers and subject matter experts collaborate with our Community Impact staff to evaluate grant requests from nonprofit agencies.

How much do you award?

Overall, we leverage about $31 million to support the community each year. Our Community Impact staff makes funding decisions on approximately $7.5 million annually.

Why give three-year grants?

United Way is proud to provide multi-year funding to each of our partner agencies, committing to three years of continued investment providing our agencies breathing room to focus on serving their constituents and allowing for innovation and sustainability.  Our investments focus on three key areas: meeting basic needs, moving to financial stability, and building for success in school and life.

We also provide a series of smaller funding opportunities throughout the year.

These include funding for responding to specific crises, innovations, or specific needs such as food insecurity or access to technology.
