United Way connecting community with transportation access grants

$55,000 in grant funds awarded to eight organizations across four counties

United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania is investing $55,000 in local nonprofits through the Supporting Community Approaches to Transportation Access fund. Grants were awarded to eight organizations based in Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler and Fayette counties.

United Way invited organizations from its five-county service region to apply for funding to increase transportation access in their communities. Applications opened on Sept. 16 and closed on Sept. 30.

Among the funded projects is Alliance for Nonprofit Resources’ “Rise Up Rides” program providing 280 trips to individuals in Butler County who would not otherwise have reliable transportation to medical appointments and other basic needs. Limited public transit options in rural communities like Butler present challenges for individuals seeking employment opportunities and access to essential services. Alliance for Nonprofit Resources will use this investment to provide rides for individuals who do not qualify for subsidized transportation services but who still do not earn enough to afford their own transportation.

Helping All Victims in Need (HAVIN), the only organization in Armstrong County that solely provides services to those impacted by domestic and sexual violence, received a $5,000 investment to purchase bus tickets, gas cards and rideshare services for survivors and to fund car repairs, registration fees, insurance and car loans.

United Way is committed to reducing barriers to transportation, enabling individuals in our community to access employment, health care appointments and food. In 2024, United Way has invested $8.4 million in programs that meet basic needs, including access to reliable transportation.
