United Way working to expand early literacy with investments in seven libraries
United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania is distributing $50,000 to seven area libraries through the Supporting Early Literacy and Family Engagement with Libraries fund. This fund was created to support library projects actively contributing to literacy efforts for children ages 0-5 in our communities.
United Way invited libraries from across its five-county service region to apply for funds for increased staffing, marketing and outreach, books and any other materials needed to enhance programming and increase family engagement. Applications opened on Dec. 8, 2023, and closed on Jan. 18, 2024. The seven funded projects are based in Allegheny, Butler, Fayette and Westmoreland counties.
Among the funded projects is Avalon Public Library’s “Library on the Go” program, which brings books and activities directly to community members at locations such as local food pantries, parks, pools and summer lunch programs. United Way’s investment in Braddock Community Library contributes to the hiring of an additional staff member to expand its youth literacy program. Both libraries received a $10,000 investment from the fund to put towards their projects.
United Way recognizes the pivotal role that early literacy plays in school readiness and is dedicated to eliminating barriers to access and fostering family engagement. In 2024, United Way invested $4.3 million in programs that build for success in school and life.
