A mother’s path to success: education, determination and support
At just 16 years old, Laina faced hurdles as a young mother, including balancing her education with child care responsibilities and navigating bullying, which made it hard for her to attend school regularly. Determined to succeed for herself and her baby girl, Laina shifted to an online high school program but still needed additional support. Her mother, with guidance from a neighbor, connected Laina to Allegheny Family Network’s (AFN) young adult education program for additional educational options.
At 17, Laina made the decision to enroll fully in the young adult education program with clear goals: to earn her diploma, pursue a career in the medical field and provide a stable future for herself and her daughter.
With her daughter safely cared for in the children’s room next to her study space, Laina took full advantage of individualized tutoring and community resources. She connected with other young mothers through AFN’s young parents support group, gaining invaluable insights and inspiration from parents who had built successful careers while raising children.
Laina’s determination paid off as she received her diploma—with her daughter by her side. Today, Laina works in an in-home care agency, providing services to older adults.
Thanks to AFN’s partnership with United Way, Laina received access to child care, transportation, onsite testing and a supportive community network that empowered her to succeed.
