Engineering a Bright Future: Reuben’s Experience with BGCWPA Programs
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania (BGCWPA) summer camp programs offer young people a way to new experiences and opportunities. Reuben, a 14-year-old club member, is an example of how these programs can change a young person’s outlook and future for the better. After completing the 2021 BGCWPA summer camp program, Reuben joined the Mechanical Engineering Pathways Institute and took a leadership role in founding the robotics club at the Shadyside Clubhouse.
As the robotics club gained popularity, Reuben rose to the challenge of leading the group. He channeled the inspiration he gained from BGCWPA into mentoring new members and guiding the club’s activities. “Being involved in BGCWPA has changed my perspective on the world,” Reuben shared. “Without the clubs, I would be the kid that sits on the sidelines. The clubs have given me a strong group of friends who share my interests. I am excited to use my experiences to pursue a career in engineering.”
Reuben’s journey with BGCWPA proves the positivity that programs can have on young people. Through the summer camp and Mechanical Engineering Pathways Institute, he discovered a passion for engineering and gained the confidence to take on a leadership role. By connecting with peers who shared his interests, Reuben found a supportive community that encouraged him to explore his potential and pursue his dreams.
With funding from partners like United Way, BGCWPA’s programs assist people like Reuben in broadening their horizons and building pathways to success.
