Finding her way back to banking

Mon Valley Initiative

Lorenda came to the United States with a strong background in accounting and finance and years of experience as a bank auditor in her native country. Determined to build a new future for her family, she immigrated with her children and began searching for work that matched her skills. While navigating the job market, she took on a range of roles from production work to receptionist positions, while staying focused on her goal of returning to the banking field.

Through her local community network, Lorenda learned about Mon Valley Initiatives (MVI)’s Workforce Development & Financial Coaching program and was encouraged to connect with a coach. From the start, she clearly expressed her desire to re-enter banking. Together, Lorenda and her coach updated her resume, explored opportunities and highlighted her strengths.

Lorenda also shared what mattered most to her: finding a stable, well-paying job close to home so she could be there for her children when needed. With these priorities in mind, her coach connected her with local opportunities that aligned with her experience and family needs.

Soon after, Lorenda interviewed for a bank teller position and was offered the job! The new role allowed her to support her family and continue helping loved ones in her home country. Lorenda credits her MVI coach for the guidance and encouragement that helped her succeed. This impact is made possible through United Way’s support of workforce development programs that help individuals like Lorenda turn experience and determination into opportunity.
