What: On March 11, United Way will host its annual Shopping Spree at the Charley Family Shop ’n Save in Greensburg. This year’s donor shopper, Megan Loughner of Hannastown, will race through the Charley Family Shop ’n Save, collecting as many nonperishable goods as she can in three minutes. All items are donated to the shopper’s charity of choice. This year, Megan will be shopping for the Welcome Home Shelter in Greensburg.

Why: The annual Shopping Spree recognizes a donor from Westmoreland County who’s selected at random to be a shopper for charity. This high-energy event yields between $600 and $1,000 in food and goods for the shopper’s charity of choice while highlighting United Way’s focus on food security and meeting basic needs. Megan will also be awarded a $250 gift card to the Charley Family Shop ’n Save.

In 2023, 418 people in Westmoreland County reached out for food assistance through United Way’s PA 211 Southwest helpline. In addition, 38% of Westmoreland households don’t earn enough to meet all their basic needs, despite household members often working multiple jobs. United Way invests $773,500 in 29 Westmoreland County partner agencies annually, including the Westmoreland County Food Bank and Knead Community Café.
