Free Tax Prep Coalition:

The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh is a powerful association of men, women, and children of all ages and backgrounds united by a shared mission: to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. For more than 170 years, the Y has been a cornerstone of Pittsburgh, working to foster youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility across Allegheny County and beyond.

United Way funding supported the Y’s participation in the Free Tax Prep Coalition at two tax sites in 2025. By providing accessible, no-cost tax assistance, the program helps individuals and families claim eligible credits, keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets and improve their financial stability. The Free Tax Prep Coalition is part of the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which engages volunteers to provide free tax preparation services nationwide.

Free Tax Prep Coalition:

The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh provides free tax preparation through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which helps individuals and families accurately file their taxes and claim all credits for which they are eligible. By offering this service, the YMCA supports financial stability and empowers community members to maximize their refunds and plan for a stronger financial future.

This grant helps fund the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh’s tax assistance efforts, supporting two tax sites in 2024. Located in primarily African-American communities in Pittsburgh, these sites provide free, accurate tax preparation that helps residents access all credits for which they qualify and improve financial stability.

Falk Facilities and Technology Improvement Fund:

The Homewood-Brushton YMCA is replacing its nearly 20-year-old water fountains with four modern bottle-filling stations. With membership and youth programming on the rise, this project will provide members with a more sustainable, hygienic and convenient way to stay hydrated.

This grant will fund the installation of bottle-filling stations at the Homewood-Brushton YMCA, to upgrade the facility’s outdated water fountains. The project supports sustainability by reducing single-use plastic waste, encourages good hygiene with touchless operation and provides convenient, accessible hydration for members of all ages.

Welcome Back Summer:

The YMCA Summer Camp offers a dynamic environment where campers learn, develop character and build friendships. Kids engage in physical activities and creative pursuits and field trips introduce youth to Pittsburgh’s rich culture and entertainment. All campers participate in swimming, learning water safety and gaining confidence in the water.

This grant funds YMCA day camps across Allegheny County that serve pre-K to middle school children with field trips, swimming and academic and social and emotional learning activities. The camps focus on building confidence and character through the Y’s core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring.
