Employee Spotlight: Alec Walker

What is your name, title, and department?

Alec Walker, resource and data manager, PA 211 Southwest

Tell me about your role at United Way.

In general, I manage a team that ensures the 211 database stays current and accurate. I also handle communication around the reports my colleagues may need, such as when grant deadlines are approaching. This involves coordinating with outside partners who might need specific data or digging up detailed numbers from our archives.

What are two things you enjoy most about working here?

I really feel like the work I’m doing is making a difference. I’ve worked in businesses where the main focus was just making money, but that never truly motivated me. It’s rewarding to have a skillset that can actually help an organization make a positive impact in people’s lives. I also appreciate seeing how a larger nonprofit like United Way operates. I’ve worked in smaller nonprofits before, but it’s impressive to see how well the 211 department and United Way collaborate like a well-oiled machine. It’s amazing that we’re able to offer such a wide range of resources through different programs.

What’s a project or accomplishment you’re most proud of?

This is my first experience managing a team, and when I started, there were quite a few learning curves to navigate. I truly appreciate all the encouraging feedback from my team. Watching them accomplish so much makes me really proud. Typically, I don’t find a lot of pride in my own work. I just do it and see the results. But as a manager, it means a lot to me to see my team grow and succeed. In short, I’m proud of my growth as a manager, and I’m equally proud of my amazing team.

What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?

I’m a fire spinner and it’s been really neat to experience getting to light things on fire and spinning them around my body. I grew interested after attending a regional Burning Man and where I saw so many people enjoying fire spinning. I thought to myself, “I think I can do that. I’m going to give it a try!” It’s funny how quickly your fear of fire fades when there’s a flame just a couple of inches from your face! I began by practicing with LED lights before graduating to real fire, making sure I was confident enough to avoid any mishaps with the sticks.

What are your other interests outside of work?

I enjoy reading, playing video games and making music. I’ve had an on-and-off relationship with playing music for the past 15 years. I can play the guitar, sing and I’ve even taught myself a bit of piano. I also have a cat that I love to spend time with.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

I would love to have the ability to talk to animals, just because I think it would lead to some great and interesting conversations. Imagine all the neighborhood gossip they could share after their sniffing adventures during walks!
