From Setback to Success
Derick, a student staff member, has been a dedicated part of the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) since he was 11. His enthusiasm and commitment quickly became defining traits, shaping his journey from an eager young participant to a responsible leader. By 16, Derick stepped into the role of student staff member, a reflection of his growth and the positive impact of YEP’s supportive environment.
Along the way, Derick faced challenges at home that affected his academic path, leading to a temporary setback during his senior year. Despite this, the support and advocacy of YEP staff helped him stay on course. With their encouragement and belief in his potential, Derick re-enrolled at Fox Chapel High School, successfully completing his studies and graduating on time with his peers.
With renewed confidence and a clear vision for his future, Derick chose to further his education at the Community College of Allegheny County, balancing academics with his passion for basketball. His goal is to transfer to a division 1 or division 2 school, where he can continue both his studies and athletic career at a higher level.
