Healing and new beginnings

Cherise was preparing to begin her studies at Penn State University. After the loss of her mother, Cherise experienced a difficult period of grief and isolation. With support from her grandfather and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region’s Positive Relationships with Strong Role Models program, she connected to a bereavement therapist and a consistent and caring mentor. Over time, that steady support helped Cherise begin reconnecting with school, peers and her own goals.

With encouragement and ongoing guidance, Cherise returned to in-person learning, secured an out-of-school time job and began planning for college. Today, she is focused on her next chapter: starting classes at Penn State in the fall.

“Cherise learned to show up for herself. Our time together has helped her stay motivated and see her own strengths,” said her mentor.

Thanks to United Way funding, programs like this help young people build skills and move toward meaningful goals in education and employment.
