Emergency Food Assistance

Due to the government shutdown, 300,000 households did not get SNAP food assistance on Nov. 3. Legal appeals may delay benefits, causing widespread food insecurity. Give today to support emergency food assistance and our 211 contact center, which has seen dramatic upticks in calls for food. Click here to give.

Elaine, a single mother devoted to her three young children, and her family, relied on disability benefits to cover their monthly expenses.

Elaine encountered a significant setback when her car required extensive repairs totaling $1,350. This unexpected expense left her unable to cover two months of rent. While the property manager was patient for several months, Elaine faced the threat of eviction if she couldn’t settle her debt soon.

Fortunately, Elaine received support from a social worker who recognized her urgent need for housing payment assistance and referred her to Jewish Family and Community Services.

The SOS program receives funding from United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania under the Meeting Basic Needs investment priority.
