More than a tax return: building financial stability in the Mon Valley

Human Services Center Mon Valley (HSCMV), a proud partner of United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, offers Free Tax Prep services at its Turtle Creek site, helping neighbors access valuable refunds while connecting them to additional community resources. This partnership allows HSCMV to strengthen financial stability, put dollars back into households and build meaningful connections across the Mon Valley.

Among those served was Mary A., a single parent raising a toddler and two preteens. While having her taxes prepared, Mary shared how grateful she was to discover the tax site and the welcoming support it provides. She especially valued the opportunity to connect with a volunteer and enjoy a sense of community. “I was able to get my taxes filed, enjoyed some great social time and connected with someone who shared my family’s culture,” Mary said.

Through the program, Mary received a total refund of $10,246: including $5,015 from the Earned Income Tax Credit, $783 from the Child Tax Credit and $4,578 from the Additional Child Tax Credit, all resources that can make a meaningful difference for her family.

HSCMV’s mission is to enhance quality of life in the Mon Valley by ensuring access to essential services and supports. With United Way’s partnership, HSCMV delivers a holistic approach to helping families not only file their taxes but also connect to tools and resources that support long-term financial well-being.
