Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank: Support for Single Moms

Jamaica, a mother of three, faced numerous challenges while striving to build a better future for her family. She became a mother during her teenage years while in foster care and later graduated from high school, all while juggling the new responsibilities of motherhood, education and employment.

Determined to provide a brighter life for her family, Jamaica enrolled at Westmoreland Community College to pursue a degree in social work. Yet, financial constraints weighed on her, particularly the high costs of diapers and formula for her youngest child. With monthly expenses ranging from $80 to $100 just for diapers, and the added difficulty of finding affordable formula due to a shortage, Jamaica found herself in a tough situation.

Fortunately, hope arrived in the form of Westmoreland County Community College’s partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank. Upon learning about this partnership, Jamaica signed up and began receiving much-needed diapers and wipes for her baby.

“This program has been lifesaving. Keeping my baby diapered and fed has helped with stress. It’s really helped take a big burden off of me,” says Jamaica.

Thanks to the diaper assistance program, Jamaica has saved money, alleviated stress and can concentrate fully on her academics. She was also able to afford essentials like gas for her vehicle, groceries for her family and even therapeutic activities for her older children. Through the Diaper Bank’s Share the Joy initiative, Jamaica’s family received Christmas gifts without adding any additional financial strain.

Jamaica is determined and looking forward to graduating soon and embarking on her career as a social worker. With her firsthand experience, she will advocate fiercely for families in crisis, ensuring that they receive the support and resources they need to thrive.
