For youth with disabilities, transitioning from high school to adulthood and employment can be challenging. The PEAL Center and Life’sWork of Western PA, United Way partner agencies, recently teamed up to provide resources and support for young people and families navigating this important life stage.

At our recent Big Book Drop event, volunteers sorted, labeled and packed 35,000 children’s books. The books were distributed to 110 literacy-focused organizations including early learning centers, libraries and schools.

For local agencies that offer summertime out-of-school experiences, planning began back in the chilly days of January.

As the executive director of Human Services Center Mon Valley, a United Way partner agency, Dave Coplan has plenty on his plate. The center houses 12 tenant agencies at its multipurpose campus in Turtle Creek and runs an array of its own programs. Dave is also an adjunct professor at CMU and the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Public and International Affairs.

We sat down with new Women United co-chairs, Megan Gilson and Tina Morascyzk, to learn what fuels their dedication to United Way, what excites them about their new leadership roles and their hopes for the future of Women United.
